What is submental fullness?
Submental fullness, sometimes called double chin, is a common condition and unfortunately rarely treated. This condition changes the harmony and proportion of the face. Persons that suffer from submental fullness are often embarrassed form it diminishing their self-esteem.
This condition can affect many adults and is not necessarily due to overweight. Submental fullness is found in both man and woman and can be cause by age, genetics or weight gain. Weight lost or exercise has no effect on submental fullness.
What is Belkyra ™ (deoxycholic acid)?
Belkyra ™ (deoxycholic acid) is a treatment approved by Health Canada to improve the appearance and curve associated to submental fullness in adults. The use of this product is secure and efficient. It is not recommended to use Belkyra ™ for other purpose than submental fullness.
How does Belkyra ™ works?
Belkyra ™ is a nonhuman and non-animal form of deoxycholic acid. The molecule is naturally present in our body. It is a secondary biliary acid use to digest fat. When injected in the subcutaneous fat, Belkyra ™ provokes the destruction of the fat cells. When these are destroyed, they cannot accumulate new fat. As soon as the esthetic expectation is reached the treatment is then stopped.
How is Belkyra ™ administerd?
Belkyra ™ is administered by injections in the fat cells of the chin. Each treatment is around 15 to 20 minutes. It is personalized by the doctor or nurse according to the amount of fat as well as the esthetic expectation to redefine the submental region.
- A period of 4 to 6 weeks is necessary to see results after each treatment. Therefore, treatments will not be done until that period.
- A small edema (swelling) is expected in the following days after the treatment. It is a sign that the fat cells are being destroyed slowly.
- Usually we expect between 2 to 4 treatment and a maximum of 6 in severe cases.
- Each patient has its own individualized treatment schedule.
A combination of treatment with fillers (Juvederm) and Botox can be recommended to restructure the chin and the neck following the lost of the submental fullness.
