Hyaluronic acid treatment (JUVÉDERM®)
Over the years, the natural volume of the face gradually decreases. This aging effect can, however, be countered by the injection of a filler such as JUVÉDERM®, Restylane® or TEOSYAL®. With the main functions of refreshing and regenerating the appearance, fillers composed of hyaluronic acid, are used to enhance, smooth and plump different areas of the face. They are therefore designed to gently restore the dermic volume, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and furrows, and gently enhance the lips.
Unlike the techniques used previously, which were composed of collagen and fat, fillers are now composed of hyaluronic acid—a substance naturally present in the human body—to plump the skin.
What is hyaluronic acid (JUVÉDERM®)?
We are sometimes apprehensive of certain aesthetic interventions for fear of introducing different foreign substances into our body. This fear is mostly related to side effects or an unnatural result.
However, these worries need not apply with hyaluronic acid. These injections, which are composed of a molecule already present in the human body, are natural and absorbable by the body. Following the treatment, the JUVÉDERM® hyaluronic acid gel or other type simply mixes with the natural hyaluronic acid contained in the dermis. As our body produces nearly 5 g per day of hyaluronic acid for the renewal of skin cells, it will recognize the molecule, thus limiting the risk of rejection and allergy. In addition, it naturally degrades in the body over time.
Hyaluronic acid is also a highly moisturizing substance. As you get older, the skin becomes fragile, thin and drier. That is why mature skin requires more hydration and care. In addition to filling hollow spaces and deep wrinkles, hyaluronic acid (JUVÉDERM®) promotes deep hydration of the skin thanks to its water retention capacity.
Which areas can be treated with hyaluronic acid (JUVÉDERM®)?
This molecule has been used in cosmetic treatments, specifically for wrinkle treatments, for more than 20 years. Since then, various techniques have made it possible to improve the appearance of patients’ skin. Above all, the goal of hyaluronic acid is to make the face appear youthful by giving it the volume and shape it had before the appearance of signs of aging.
Hyaluronic acid treatments (JUVÉDERM®) are mainly used to reduce the wrinkles and depressions of the dermis due to scars, to increase the volume of the lips and to restore soft tissue loss. Here are some functions of hyaluronic acid treatments (JUVÉDERM®):
- Decrease the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, especially those around the mouth also known as marionette lines, nasolabial folds and dark circles.
- Offset the loss of skin volume due to age. Under the effect of aging, the skin tends to sag and lose volume, especially around the temples, cheekbones, cheeks and chin.
- Redraw the outline of the lips. Its volumizing effect helps to reshape the contour of the lips, giving them a fuller appearance, improving their symmetry, and providing hydration.
- Bridge hollow scars caused by acne or other skin conditions.
- Reduce the depth of a chin crease or correct its receding appearance.
Is hyaluronic acid wrinkle treatment (JUVÉDERM®) safe?
Since hyaluronic acid contained in fillers such as JUVÉDERM®, Restylane® or TEOSYAL® is created in the laboratory by biosynthesis, patients are not likely to develop an allergic reaction or rejection following treatment.
Potential side effects following treatment are temporary and often limited to the area of injection. They may present as redness, swelling, a tingling sensation or numbness. Reactions may appear immediately or later, one week after treatment and disappear within seven days.
How does a hyaluronic acid treatment (JUVÉDERM®) work?
The JUVÉDERM® treatment session takes between 15 and 45 minutes depending on the area to be treated. Here is what a treatment consists of:
Assessment of the patient and their state of health
In order to properly determine the amount of filler needed for treatment, it is important to discuss your expectations of the results with the professional administering the injections. Also, you should use this time to address the costs, treatment frequency, possible side effects and the products to use in your daily routine to promote lasting results. It is also during this first meeting that the doctor or nurse clinician will inquire about your overall health.
Taking pictures
To visualize the areas affected by aging and to have a comparison tool after the treatments, photos will be taken and put in your file. Being able to refer to before and after pictures is very encouraging during the treatment process.
Treatment plan
Taking into account your age, the quality of your skin, your genetics, but also your expectations, the doctor or nurse clinician will determine a treatment plan to obtain a more natural result. They can offer you a combination of treatments, such as injections of fillers and neuromodulators (BOTOX®), administered strategically, for optimal results.
JUVÉDERM® hyaluronic acid injections
Finally, the doctor or nurse clinician will inject the predetermined dose of hyaluronic acid gel (JUVÉDERM®) into the skin or subcutaneous space with an extra-fine needle.
Following injection, there are no contraindications for you to resume your daily activities, except to avoid wearing make-up the day of the treatment. Also, it is recommended not to expose yourself to the sun or the cold, and to refrain from saunas, spas or steam baths during the two weeks following the treatment.
What is the cost of a hyaluronic acid treatment (JUVÉDERM®)?
The cost of a treatment varies depending on the area to be treated and the amount of hyaluronic acid (JUVÉDERM®) required to achieve the desired result. Our professional team will set up a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs, then advise you on treatment options and their associated costs.
Are the results of a hyaluronic acid treatment (JUVÉDERM®) sustainable?
The duration of the treatment depends on your skin type, your lifestyle and your age among others. The effects of hyaluronic acid (JUVÉDERM®) normally last between 9 months and 24 months depending on the chosen filler and the treated area. As they are temporary, it will be necessary to repeat the treatments to maintain the effect over time.
If, however, you decide to stop receiving treatment, the remaining hyaluronic acid will naturally absorb in the body and its effects will gradually disappear.
