Neuromodulator injection (Botox®) treatments
Unsurprisingly, neuromodulators (Botox Cosmetic®) have become the most widely distributed medical aesthetic treatment in North America. This treatment requires only a few minutes to perform and does not require anesthesia. Neuromodulator (Botox®) injections are performed in our Laval clinic, located only a few minutes from Montréal.
What exactly is Neuromodulator (Botox®) injection treatments? What should you know?
Neuromodulator (Botox®) is a synthetic substance made of the type-A botulinum toxin, purified and attenuated, which is administered by injection. Neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox Cosmetic®) is the number one treatment for dynamic wrinkles located throughout the face. This toxin acts as a motor nerve relaxant. In other words, neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox®) limits motor function by reducing the capacity of contraction of a specific muscle group. Since the muscle can no longer contract (tighten) as forcefully after neuromodulators injection treatments, the development of permanent wrinkles is systematically reduced.
Neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox Cosmetic®) acts directly on the targeted muscle or muscle group by relaxing them. That is why it is described as a muscle relaxant, making the facial expression look rested and rejuvenated.
Which wrinkles can be treated with neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox® injections)?
This safe and effective treatment, which is performed in just a few minutes, is used to obtain a more relaxed facial expression. Neuromodulator( Botox®) injection treatments are mainly used on the upper part of the face, particularly on the horizontal forehead lines, glabella and crow’s feet to smooth wrinkles, giving the patient a fresh, youthful complexion.
Depending on the case, more advanced neuromodulators (Botox Cosmetic®) injection techniques can improve a drooping eyelid, gummy smiles and even wrinkly-looking necks or cheeks.
Neuromodulator (Botox®) injection treatments also help to rejuvenate the neck and are effective to treat marionette lines at the corners of the mouth as well as smokers’ lines around the lips. This technique is also a good way to reduce the orange peel effect on the chin.
Beyond the treatment of dynamic wrinkles, it’s possible to prevent the development of wrinkles and stop their growth by using neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox Cosmetic®) while preserving a natural appearance.
In addition to its aesthetic properties, neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox Cosmetic®) also has great therapeutic properties. It is used in the treatment of other symptoms such as severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), blepharospasm (spasm of the eyelids), strabismus (crossed eyes) or idiopathic rotational cervical dystonia (severe neck and shoulder muscle spasms).
Are neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox Cosmetic®) safe?
The effectiveness of neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox Cosmetic®) has been demonstrated countless times since the very first time it was used in the medical field over 30 years ago. The use of neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox Cosmetic®) in medical aesthetic treatments has been around for almost two decades and the product has been controlled and approved by Health Canada for over twenty years. As such, we are confident that neuromodulator (Botox®) injections are safe and have no long-term side effects.
The most common side effects following neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox Cosmetic®) are mild pain, local edema (fluid buildup) or erythema (reddening of the skin) at the injection site. These side effects are temporary and reversible.
However, it is very important that neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox Cosmetic®) are performed by specialists (doctors or nurses) experienced in injectables, preferably in botulinum toxin injections. Their knowledge will allow them to administer the precise amount of neuromodulators (Botox Cosmetic®) needed to obtain the result that meets the patient’s expectations.
What happens during a neuromodulators (Botox Cosmetic®) injection session?
First, remember the importance of choosing a well-recommended specialist who has the knowledge and experience required to perform neuromodulator (Botox®) injections.
- A neuromodulators (Botox Cosmetic®) injection session begins with proper preparation of the injectable. This involves mixing the type-A botulinum toxin, which looks like a white powder, with a dose of sterile saline solution. Using a micro needle, this liquid preparation is then injected in small quantities into the localized muscles responsible for the formation of wrinkles. Depending on the strength of the muscle in question and the initial condition of the skin, the specialist will determine the number of units needed.
- The treatment is quick and painless. It lasts 15 to 30 minutes and doesn’t involve any recovery time. However, it is not recommended to touch the injection site in the hours following the treatment or to exert yourself physically.
- To maintain muscle relaxation, neuromodulators (Botox Cosmetic®) sessions are suggested three to four times a year.
Ideally, we recommend three treatments over the span of three months to effectively condition the muscle to remain relaxed. Of course, the muscle will retain its ability to contract for a natural appearance.
How much do neuromodulator (Botox®) injections cost?
The cost of a neuromodulators injection treatments (Botox Cosmetic®) certainly depends on the skills and the experience of the physician.
The area being injected will also impact the cost of the session. Certain areas have larger muscles than others and require a higher dose. Furthermore, the cost will depend on the number of areas being treated.
Finally, the cost of a neuromodulators (Botox Cosmetic®) session will depend on the number of units that the specialist will inject into a specific area. The number of units necessary to achieve an optimal result varies from person to person. This is because everyone’s muscles contract differently and vary in strength and size.
Do neuromodulators (Botox Cosmetic®) injections provide long-term results?
Neuromodulator (Botox®) is a muscle relaxant, which begins to act in the days following the injection and may take a few weeks to reach its optimal results.
The muscle relaxant effect is gradual and will start to appear three to ten days after the injection. During the contraction of the muscles, the folds of the skin will thus become less and less visible. Depending on the patient and the area treated, the positive effects can be seen one to four weeks after the injection, and will last for three to six months. Thereafter, the treatments will have to be renewed and can also be combined with volumizing injections (filling agent) for an overall rejuvenation of the face.
Finally, as we want our patients to be fully satisfied, we always schedule a follow-up appointment two weeks after the neuromodulators (Botox Cosmetic®) injection session to ensure that your expectations are being met and that any asymmetrical forms can be corrected if needed.
